Dundee United Community Trust is launching a new programme focusing on social inclusion for those living with a disability, funded by the SPFL Trust’s new Innovation Fund.

The new SPFL Trust Innovation Fund will provide around £10,000 of ‘seed funding’ per participating community trust to test new ideas. This approach provides flexibility to each charity, helping them to find ways that work effectively.

This follows the recent success of the SPFL Trust’s  Winter Support Fund, which saw funding awarded to support ten community trusts to deliver programmes throughout the winter.

Programmes will all focus on alleviating the effects of poverty across Scotland. All are to be framed around health and wellbeing, employability, inclusion or attainment - key factors that can help support better outcomes for people.

Seven community trusts associated with SPFL clubs are being supported in this round of funding, of which the Tannadice based charity is one, following a successful application.

The programme, which will be named by participants after the initial launch, aims to provide much-needed opportunities for adults with a range of disabilities, in a bid to reduce loneliness and social isolation. The peer-designed activities will create meaningful experiences for its participants and ultimately help to improve overall wellbeing.

Lisa Croll, Head of Operations at Dundee United Community Trust said:

“Our programme is about combating social isolation within that community. One thing that we’ve learned through feedback we’ve had, is that people living with a disability in Dundee, after they reach adult age, there's very little social engagement for them to take part in in the city.

Hopefully this is something that can be a long-term project because we know that there’s individuals who will greatly benefit from attending.

As soon as the funding was available, we knew that this was the project that we wanted to apply to run.”

SPFL Trust CEO, Nicky Reid, added:

“We are delighted to be supporting Dundee United Community Trust on their newest programme, which will support people in Dundee living with a disability. This programme will allow participants to be involved in something special within their community, and I’m sure it will be a great success.

Following the success of our Winter Support Fund, we wanted to continue to develop opportunities for community trusts to progress ideas and solutions that they believe will work locally.

The SPFL Trust Innovation Fund is about enabling creative thinking and innovation, so that community trusts can demonstrate impact, and show that their ideas can work. That should in turn allow them to look at longer term funding solutions.”
